These cookies were a bit challenging for Julia to stencil sans visible swipes, since the stencils were relatively large (4-plus inches) and came so close to the icing edge. If you’re a beginner stenciler, Julia recommends starting with smaller stencils, with relatively wide and separated openings, that clear the edge of the icing by at least 1/4 inch. When the stencil fits neatly into the natural dip in the center of the cookie icing, it lays flatter and the icing is less likely to slip underneath into areas it shouldn’t be.
