Fab 5000 Giveaway!

Wowza! I woke up this morning to find my Facebook fan count hovering very close to 5000! I’m frankly flabbergasted. (Say that three times fast!) Thank you so very much to those who have appreciated my work over the years. When I’ve found my creative energy flagging, as it does from time to time, you’ve been there to lift my spirits and to urge me back into my decorating chair. (Yes, I’ve got a special chair - it’s on wheels so I can zoom from one end of the kitchen to the other and back, all while decorating. Better yet, it’s got a shiny black lacquer finish that’s impervious to food coloring stains!)

As an expression of my gratitude (and for the sheer fun of it), I’m offering this one-time Fab 5000 Giveaway. Just tell me what you like most about cookies or cookie decorating in the comments (“Stir the Pot”) section, below. The comment whose position matches the number drawn by my random number generator on Tuesday, July 17 (10am central) will win . . .

. . . one copy each of my books Cookie Swap and Ultimate Cookies, plus a selection of decorating items (retail value roughly: $150 US) from, hand-picked for you by me.

Be sure to spread the fun by sharing this post on Facebook and with your fellow cookier friends. And please like my Facebook fan page, if you haven’t already - I’d actually like to keep to my word and top 5000 fans by the close of this giveaway! ;) Live sweetly!

Congrats to Nicole Burris (comment #80)! Her comment says it all, doesn’t it?:

I love everything about cookies and cookie decorating. But the thing that brings me the most joy is the look on peoples faces when they get the cookies that have been custom made for them. (Nicole Burris)

Thanks again to all who have supported me and my work over the years. (I am eternally grateful.) And thank you to the many people who posted such heartfelt remarks below. It’s clear that so many love the craft of cookie decorating as much as I do - this passion has been a wonderful thing to witness!

Wow, what I like most I would have to say is how happy people are when they get the cookies. If their happy, I am happy. Also just the joy I get while I am sitting and decorating. I get into my little cookie zone!!!

By Kimberly Sweet Creations on July 14, 2012

The best things I love about decorating cookies is seeing a person’s face when they see what was create for them.  Decorating cookies is also a big stress reliever for me!  I teach middle school math and there are days that I need something fun to do to take my mind off of work!  Decorating cookies does that for me!!!

By Anne Schroeder on July 14, 2012

I love cookies because they are the most portable snack ever! And I am just gobstruck when I see all of the design possibilities for cookies! Just love cookies, my fave snack!

By Gertrude Carter on July 14, 2012

I love the process of translating an idea or image from my head to a cookie. It’s so rewarding when you meet the challenge and the final products looks like you saw it in your imagination . It’s often challenging, but always gratifying.

Cookie decorating is so much fun and allows the creativity in each one of us to come out!  Growing up, we always got special cookies for each holiday, and I tried to carry that on with my four children and now, my 3 grandchildren!
Love all the different styles of cookie cutters available now and your very unique ideas for decorating!
Thank you for sharing with us all!

My favorite part is when i get to make really detailed cookies and i finally get to get really into all the little details .

By amanda sinisi on July 14, 2012

The best part for me in cookie baking and decorating is letting my grandchildren help.  I love baking and want to pass that love along to them.  They love pastry bags and what they call “writing” on the cookies.  The twins are three and the little one is 2 and they all enjoy working with Nana.

By Norine Blossom on July 14, 2012

congrats I love ur work cant waite for christmas cookie time to arrive my fav holiday

By Lori a Siverson on July 14, 2012

What I really love about decorated cookies is…they’re NOT my Mom’s cookies!

Growing up, a cookie was supposed to have only sanded sugar on them, and they were only relegated to one, maybe two seasons - Christmas and maybe Thanksgiving.  Cookies were a special occasion, but today that’s not the case.  Cookies are back “in” and have so much class, artistry, and have brought back the joy.  They were “for kids only”, but now everyone wants decorated cookies!

I really don’t like those who are out there that try to destroy all things sugar.  Sorry…life isn’t all brussel sprouts and cabbage.  Let them eat cauliflower….but in the meantime, pass me the cookies!  :)

By Suzanne Bald on July 14, 2012

I found out about cookie decorating through a relative in another county not too far from me.  No one else in my area decorates cookies like this. I have had to learn everything from Facebook ladies and reading their blogs. I learned about you from some of my cookie friends and I was blown away at all of the beautiful things you do with a cookie. I am 50 as of this year and never had an idea that I would be involved in such a wonderful hobby like this. I can’t wait to see what else I can learn. My mind can’t absorb all that I have already seen. Everyday is a new day of learning for me and I can’t explain how much I am loving all that I am learning and it is all because of people like you. Thank you so, so, so, very much.

I love making people happy with the cookies I make.

By Lorraine Russo-Harty on July 14, 2012

I love cookies because they are so individual.  Each one can be different and created just for one special person.

By Joanne Lima on July 14, 2012

I love that I can take an item and reproduce the look of it using cookie dough and icing. It still amazes me that I can make something that actually looks so cool! Who knew? LOL

By Kari Hayes on July 14, 2012

Sugar cookies give you the freedom to make individual single-serving works of art.  You can easily freeze and thaw a few at a time to work on.  They are not that expensive to make and are easy to transport (I never have to worry about a cookie shifting while driving!).  Best of all, even if they don’t turn out as beautiful/cute as you envisioned, they are still delicious.
Congratulations on 5,000 likes (I’m sure you will have it VERY soon) and thank you for the give away!  Please keep up your inspiring work.

By Susan S on July 14, 2012

I love how relaxing decorating can be.  It really allows me an outlet for my creativity.  And nothing is more special than seeing the look on someone’s face when they receive my cookies.  Baking has always been a special way for me to spread a little love.

By Kim (Barefoot 'n Baking) on July 14, 2012

I really like that a little treat (cookie) can be totally personalized and customized for many different people. A cake on the other hand is one big piece of art that many share.

By Regina @ SpecialtyCakeCreations on July 14, 2012

The thing I like the most about cookies and decorating them is the fun of destressing and being creative in what you make~  My fav memory that still is with me to this day, is that of my parents & I making homemade sugar cookies with Christmas cookie cutters and having different colors of icing and paintbrushes to make them just the way we wanted them, giving them that homemade heartfelt touch.  That is a memory I’ll cherish forever <3

By kelly walker on July 14, 2012

By Kim @ The Cookie Puzzle on July 14, 2012

I really love decorating cookies! There is nothing like having boxes and bags fill with my sweet treats to share with friends and family. I just stumbled upon you work on FB and have been inspired by your ideas and visions.

I love decorating cookies with my daughters.  They have such a fun time putting on the icing and sprinkles :) watching them is so much fun!

By Ashley Herrera on July 14, 2012

My favorite thing about decorating is being able to share the moment with my daughter who is 9 years old. If I mess up on a design or am not happy with the way it looks, she never fails to remind me that it doesn’t always have to be perfect.  It will still be beautiful. <3

By Lourdes Acuna on July 14, 2012

The best thing I love about decorating is the look on people’s faces when they can’t believe how great my designs turn out for them.  I love to surprise & impress people with going a bit over the top for them!

Wow! Your creativity and tallet is so incredible! You truly make my novice interest in baking and decorating cupcakes (and now cookies) even more exciting and motivating. Thank you for that.

By Shari Valdon on July 14, 2012

I love making cookies, it relaxes me. It allows me to be creative, and share my experience. And, when i give them away to family and friends, the smiles on their faces make it all worth while….

By Ruth Loughlin on July 14, 2012

What I like most about cookie decorating, aside from the creative outlet & smiles the results bring to recipients’ faces, is the escape it offers me. My son has autism & my daughter has severe bipolar disorder so my hands & heart are often full. However my kids are usually able to hold it together when I’m baking because they like to test the results. I also find it satisfying to just be able to complete a task. Decorating cookies can be done in stages so even if the kids need me, I’m able to eventually get a finished product looks and tastes wonderful.

By Sally Guth on July 14, 2012

Since my family has all moved out of state, cookie decorating has become my go to therapy. Keeps me occupied until my kids/grandkids come home for visits.

By Tami on July 14, 2012

My favorite part of decorating cookies is knowing that imagination is the limit!

By Katelyn on July 14, 2012

I just love everything beautiful especially with “sweet” combination. I not just LOVE to create something beautiful ,i NEED to create! And i love to see happy faces of those who get my cookies. And you are such an inspiration to me. With your every creation i think it could not get any better, but you keep on surprising me. I’m stunned! Your imagination has no limits,Julia!

By Love Nerutsa on July 14, 2012

I think the the best thing I like about cookies and decorating is the challenge—there are so many wonderful and talented cookiers out there, that are willing to share their ideas and tips—it’s fun for me to accept the challenge of trying to create something that others find enjoyable, all the while learning new techniques—both for the people who get to eat my cookies and for all my internet friends who like to look at them.
Congrats Julia on hitting 5000! you are amazing ;)

By Christine Sarver on July 14, 2012

I love decorating cookies because each person you bake for will get a unique treat.  I don’t like making the same designs over and over again.  Once I’ve created a cookie design for someone, I move on to a new technique.  I’ve shipped thousands of decorated sugar cookies across the country and the comments are all the same—“they’re too pretty to eat!”  I tell them to take a picture and eat the cookie!  LOL Your cookies are AMAZING, and I’m grateful that you share your designs with us.

By Debra J. Mosely on July 14, 2012

I love the process of baking and decorating cookies itself.  The scent of the oven just takes me back to my childhood.  And preparing a project, and choosing every single detail, from the colors I’ll use for the icing to the bow that will finish the bag and give a fancy and feminine touch to all of it…  And I also love checking out what other poeple are doing on the net…

By Fuen Martin on July 14, 2012

I love decorating and bringing cookies to life and seeing the smiles of those that get to see my sweet creations.

By carol shimwell on July 14, 2012

Julia your cookies are always perfection, and so inspirational and creative. Love love love them all.

By Cookievonster on July 14, 2012

I love the creative part of making decorated cookies. But most of all, I love meeting people and seeing how excited they get when they first see their cookies. Many of them have become very good friends of mine, and all just from the common love for cookies.

By Evon on July 14, 2012

I love cookies because EVERYONE loves cookies. Anyone I give cookies to is happy. When I was a girl, my Mom’s cookie jar was a guarantee of her love. As a nurse, I could make cookies that fit my patient’s dietary needs and they would be so thrilled. As a soldier, I could offer the locals cookies from home and make friends for the duration of my duty. As a Mom, the after school cookie always mended the broken heart. As a Gramma (Gramma Cookie, no less) I am remembered for being the Gramma who ALWAYS has cookies. Even now, my best friend knows that a parcel of cookies is the most welcome gift. So I guess you could say…... Cookies are a universal language, that spans every country, age, relationship, duty, grief and joy.

By Tricia on July 14, 2012

I love the “craftiness” of decorating the cookies. I’m also a tolepainter so there is a fairly close resemblance of the two.

By Donna Armstrong on July 14, 2012

What I like most is the thrill my greatgrandchildren get when looking at cookies and realizing that they can be eaten.

By Molly Hoople on July 14, 2012

I am a stay at home mom of a 3 year old little boy & have a little one on the way. My husband is in the Army and unfortunately has to be away a lot. I started decorating cookies while planning birthdays and events for my son having no idea the sheer joy that it would bring me. My days are long and busy but no matter how much chaos my day has been filled with I look forward for the house to finally be quiet at the end of the day so that I can decorate some cookies :) It has given me a sense of self again, a sense of accomplishment, and it truly makes my heart smile seeing people love and appreciate my beautiful cookies :)

Congrats again on reaching over 5000 likes and thank you for doing such an AWESOME giveaway!!The thing I like most about cookie decorating is seeing the customers’ reactions to what I’ve made. Not too long ago, I actually had a woman say she was tearing up and then gave me a big hug. Things like that TOTALLY make my day! I also like having a way to be artistic…you can put anything on a cookie…well almost anything! lol

By Dana (Piece of Cake, Jamestown, NY) on July 15, 2012

The thing that’s so great about decorating cookies is that if you mess one up, it’s not a major big deal.  You can make them ahead of time and decorate when the mood strikes.  And there are soooo many ways to decorate, with soooo many creative, talented experts out there (such as yourself) who generously share their knowledge.  Cookiers are the BEST!

Hi Julia:

What I like most about cookies and cookie decorating is that it brings me closer to my friends. My first cookie swap was in response to my mom’s unexpected death.  I felt so alone. I reached out to people by hosting both a friend swap and a neighborhood swap. I wanted to believe that I had connection in the world. I felt really detached after losing my mom. I have had these swaps and added a work cookie swap now every year since 2003.  I have met many new people, kept contact with friends, and co-workers through cookies. I also love the part of the exchange where we share the history of why we made the cookie we did. Eating is also a high point!  Thanks for reading. :)

By Shari Noda on July 15, 2012

Cookies are delicious by themselves but decorating them is just an expression of our love and care towards others. Each decorated piece is a part of me that goes to the word spreading my contentment and happiness. Those small pieces are so powerful messages that nobody stays indifferent. That’s why I love making and decorating cookies.

By Mary Claire on July 16, 2012

I like the never ending possibilities that you have when decorating cookies. From pictures frames to birthday parties, your imagination can run wild. There is no limit to the amount of things you can create with cookies and decorating cookies. The smiles on the person’s face to show you that you just made their day and that they will remember what you did for them. Decorating cookies is part of a zone of happiness and an enjoyment for what you can create everyday. Nothing else matters but what shape and colors you place on your cookie and decorating cookies is like an art form that you fall into and that attracts people to come and see.

By Jessica Stefanick on July 16, 2012

The best thing about decorating cookies is how excited the kids are when they get a special
cookie of something they like…. Then when they see the cookie has their name on it… WOW the smiles get HUGE!!!!  Just makes me feel so good to make a child feel special!!

I love making cookies because -
before I discovered this art I had no real purpose in life.  I am new to living in a rural community, where I do not know anyone.  My husband works about a 13 hour drive away from here and stays there for 2 weeks at a time so I am alone a lot.  It can be very lonely at times.  I cant find a job here, it is a depressed area.  My God I sound pathetic.  I had to find something to keep me busy.  Last Christmas I decided to try and bake some cookies in the toaster oven ( I dont have a oven), and it worked. I was looking for cookie recipes on the internet and found all kinds of sites with decorated cookies.  I made a list of supplies that I would need and went to town and bought the ones I could find.  I came home and dove right in.  I fell in love.  When I look at pictures of those first cookies I have to laugh, but I was so proud of them!  I had accomplished something I thought I could never do.  I have been hooked ever since. I am currently waiting for the mail to bring me my order, which includes your book Cookie Swap.  Decorating cookies has given me a purpose and a life!

First of all LOVE YOU! and love your cookie creations! Why do I love to do cookies? I love watching an idea come together then to see the looks on people’s faces when they get them. Having two kids and one on the way can be stressful but when I do cookies its a creative release. I can just be me…relax and create!

By Marlena Adriance-Exner on July 16, 2012

I love tha with a little sugar, flour and eggs. You can create any design. From elegant. To over the top (the wreath cookie). I am constantly amazed at what cookiers can create.

I like cookies because they remind me of my mom. On wet, cloudy days she always made cookies and when I got home from school the house would smell amazing! She let us help decorate cookies at Christmas…so many good memories!

love cookies to decorate

By charlotte florian on July 16, 2012

What I like most about cookies is finally finding a person that can make them extravagant like you can! I’ve never seen anyone decorate cookies as meticulously and detailed as you can. I am completely blown away with every one I see. You are a true artist. Edible art is the best art!

By Amanda on July 16, 2012

My favor part of decorating cookies is the actual decoration stage and of course the finished product. It makes all that time spent mixing colors and cleaning out piping tips worth it!

By Melissa on July 16, 2012

I love creating new things and seeing the excitement of others when they see my creations :)

A cookie can always make your day better, no matter how horrible it has been so far.

I love making cookies for special events and everyday occasions. I think decorated cookies can brighten up any event! Plus, it’s also a great de-stressor for me.

By Denise on July 16, 2012

I have never been very good at cookie decorating but something always draws me to it. Perhaps that the options are endless! You can turn any cookie cooker cutter into a thousand different designs and all the different techniques with icing? Holy cow! Even if my cookies never turn out like some of the amazing cookie masters out there (yet!) I always have a blast doing it, specially when my sisters decide to join me!

By Nikki Belleperche on July 16, 2012

What I love about cookies is that they bring back awesome memories of my family during the holidays. Every year my mother, sisters and I would bake a dozen or so different type of cookies and present them on trays and platters when family and friends came to visit. I hope to carry this tradition on with my own son.

I Love the awesome taste of cookies

By Dia Cook on July 16, 2012

Cookies are better than any other dessert because you are allowed to eat as many as you want without being labeled a “pig”! Decorated they become works of edible art!

By Cynthia Cox on July 17, 2012

What I like most about decorating cookies is seeing the look on people’s faces saying “I wonder did she really make these”.

Decorating cookies has brought out my inner artist which was something I was always looking to do but I never thought it would surface in my kitchen using cookie cutters and mixing up Royal Icing and trying not to eat what I was making.

By Gilda Payne on July 17, 2012

What I love about cookie decorating is having an artistic outlet. Each cookie is an empty canvas that has the potential of making someone smile.
...and I love the smell of sweet frosting when I come into the kitchen first thing in the morning from an evening of cookie drying! lol
Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Congrats on 5000 fans!

I love cookie decorating, because I love to see the reaction on others faces when I present them with cookies.  It has also become a great stress reliever!  Thanks for the giveaway!

By Julie Haan on July 17, 2012

Congrats on 5000! (Rather, 5,449 at this point!)

The very best part of cookie-ing is still a complete wonder & surprise to me. It’s not the cookies, nor the designs… it’s the “sweet” people behind the sugar. I love the little corner of the cookie world that I can call my friends, and I can’t wait to check in each day! :-)

By Nicole (Life's a Batch) on July 17, 2012

There are two reasons I love decorating cookies. My favorite part of cookie decorating is the expression of the person receiving the gift. To see cookies bring joy to others brings me joy. The other part is the challenge of creating what’s in my head onto a cookie and liking the results. It’s a great sense of accomplishment.

By SHANNNON HEUPEL on July 17, 2012

What I love most about cookie decorating is that I can be as creative as I want to be! There is no right or wrong!

I love everything about cookies and cookie decorating. But the thing that brings me the most joy is the look on peoples faces when they get the cookies that have been custom made for them. (Nicole Burris)
